How Much Does a Business Website Cost in the UK?

What shapes the price of a business website in the UK — design, content, ecommerce, integrations and ongoing costs — with our published package pricing.

By Visionary Media Sol

The honest answer is that there is no universal price for a business website in the UK. A simple brochure site for a sole trader and a custom ecommerce platform are both “business websites”, yet they can differ in cost by an order of magnitude. What you pay is determined by what the website needs to do, how it is designed, how much content is involved, and what happens after launch.

To give you something concrete to work with, this guide explains the factors that move website prices up and down, and shares Visionary Media Sol’s published web design package pricing — so you can see exactly what one UK agency charges, and why.

Why two quotes for “the same website” can differ so much

When business owners compare quotes, they are often not comparing like for like. One agency’s price may cover a template-based design, a stock structure and a handover at launch. Another may include a bespoke design process, copywriting, search engine optimisation groundwork, integrations and post-launch support. Both quotes describe “a five-page website” — but they are different products. Before comparing prices, compare what is actually included.

The main factors that drive website cost

Number of pages and site structure

A small site of three or four pages takes less time to design, build and test than a twenty-page site with a complex structure. More pages usually mean more design work, more content to prepare, and more quality assurance before launch. A clear, simple structure is often better for visitors anyway — the goal is not to maximise page count.

Template-based vs bespoke design

Template-based websites use pre-built layouts. They are faster and cheaper to produce, at the cost of flexibility and distinctiveness — your site will look similar to many others. Bespoke design, where every layout is drawn from scratch around your brand, takes more designer time and is reflected in the price, but produces a website that does not look like your competitors’.

Content requirements

Someone has to write the words. Whether you supply finished copy, work from an outline your agency shapes with you, or ask them to write it for you changes the scope of the project considerably. Professional copywriting is a skill of its own and is often quoted separately, and rightly so — the wording on your site does as much work as the design.

Functionality and integrations

A contact form is simple. Booking systems, customer portals, membership areas, CRM links and payment processing are not. Each piece of functionality adds design, development and testing time, and often ongoing maintenance too. Being precise about which features are genuinely needed — rather than nice to have — is one of the most effective ways to control a website budget.

Ecommerce requirements

An online store adds a whole layer on top of a standard website: a product catalogue, stock management, secure checkout, order handling and the processes behind dispatch and returns. The larger the catalogue and the more complex the product options, the more work is involved. Ecommerce is covered in more detail below.

Redesign vs new build

A redesign starts from an existing site, which changes the work involved rather than simply reducing it. Migrating content and preserving existing search rankings add their own careful tasks. Whether a redesign or a full rebuild makes more sense depends on the state of the current site — we cover that later in this guide.

What Visionary Media Sol packages cost

Our published website packages are fixed-price, which removes most of the guesswork. The figures below are our current published pricing:

PackageLaunch priceStandard pricePagesTypical delivery
Starter Website£149£199Up to 45–7 working days
Business Website£399£499Up to 87–10 working days
Growth Website£699£899Pages and functionality as agreed in your project specification10–14 working days
EnterpriseFrom £1,499Custom quotationBespoke scopeCustom timeline

Every package includes a professionally responsive build, contact forms, on-page SEO basics, twelve months of shared hosting, a standard .co.uk domain and an SSL certificate. Design revision rounds scale with the package — three on Starter, five on Business and eight on Growth, with unlimited revisions during the agreed design phase on Enterprise. Post-launch support runs for fourteen, thirty and sixty days respectively. Enterprise builds are fully bespoke, so they are quoted individually after scoping.

Ongoing costs after launch

The build price is not the end of the story. A website is an ongoing asset with ongoing costs, and it is better to know about them up front:

  • Hosting. Our packages include twelve months of shared hosting; budget for annual renewal once the included period ends.
  • Domain renewal. Your .co.uk (or other) domain renews annually — usually a modest but easy-to-forget cost.
  • Maintenance. Keeping software, security and content up to date. Our website maintenance plans start from £99 per month.
  • Marketing. Optional, but often the reason the site exists in the first place — SEO, advertising or content work budgeted separately.

Ecommerce and larger builds

Online stores are quoted individually because requirements vary widely. As a starting reference, our ecommerce website development service describes starter stores from around £1,999, rising for larger catalogues, custom functionality and more complex integrations. If you are selling online, expect the conversation to start with what you sell, how many products you carry and how orders are fulfilled — those answers shape the price far more than the design alone.

Redesign costs

If you already have a website, a redesign is usually more cost-effective than a full rebuild when the existing content and structure are sound. Our website redesign service typically ranges from £999 to £3,999 depending on the size and complexity of the current site. The deciding factors are the number of pages, how much needs to change structurally, and how carefully existing search rankings need to be preserved during the migration.

How to get an accurate quote

Whichever agency you choose, you will get a more accurate quote — and a better website — if you arrive with:

  • A clear statement of what the website is for — enquiries, sales, bookings or credibility.
  • The pages or sections you already know you need.
  • Any must-have features, such as booking, payments or member areas.
  • Whether your content exists, needs editing, or needs writing from scratch.
  • An honest budget range, so the agency can propose the right solution rather than guess.

Any agency worth working with should be able to explain plainly what is and is not included, what happens if you want changes later, and what you will pay beyond year one. If a quote looks surprisingly cheap, ask those questions before committing — the answers matter more than the number.
